About Taizé Prayer
Taizé prayer was founded in 1940 by Brother Roger Schutz, a monk in France who hid Jewish refugees fleeing the Nazi occupation. Prayer began in a field and people came! Taize prayer allows for quiet wherein the Holy Spirit can speak through Scripture, silence, and song.
Taizé is a universal contemplative prayer using musical mantra-like singing and moments of silence. Scripture is read; however, there is no preaching. Taizé songs are simple phrases from Scripture sung repeatedly. Repetition helps participants move from the head to the heart, a place of inner stillness.
In our culture we often fear silence; however, the period of quiet in the prayer serves as an act of trust and belief that God is present with us. It’s a time to let the words of the chants take root in us as we listen for the “still, small voice” of God.
Today we pray for inner peace and for peace in our World. Gathered together our personal meditative prayer is complemented by the prayer of others who support us in our Prayer for PEACE everywhere.
