Change the World with Your Presence
We endeavor to express in our lives the Dominican motto: to praise, to bless, and to preach.
Our patron St. Catherine of Siena wrote: “Be who you were meant to be and you will change the world.” Her message wasn’t just intended for vowed religious. It was intended to encourage and empower every individual.
Sisters of the Dominican Order of Preachers have spent lifetimes delving deeply into being present. Our desire is for our presence to nurture hope in the world. For hope is that aspect of faith which makes us certain that the world is cared for and loved by God. Hope obliges us to work toward the realization of the promises found in Jesus: freedom, peace, justice, and reconciliation.
Prayer & Preaching
Sisters are on mission with Jesus, praying with their lives. Imagine the multitude of prayers lifted up by all of our Sisters over 150 years!
“Be still and know that I am God,” invites the psalmist. Prayer is a vital part of each Sister’s ministry. Each Sister chooses a special prayer ministry, typically something close to her heart. “I pray for parents and children seeking legal status in the USA,” says Sister Ada Dominguez, OP, retired principal in Albuquerque, New Mexico. “I spent 21 years in the public school here and often witnessed the struggle firsthand as my students and their parents sought to unite their families. I was drawn to welcome every immigrant, accept them, help them to get educated, and have their physical needs met. This is my prayer.”
“I believe in prayer, God listens to us if we open our hearts. Though we can’t stop with prayer. We must take steps to help those prayers become a reality,” says Sr. Ada.
