Volunteer to become a land steward at Marywood in Grand Rapids this October.
If you’d like to learn more about the work being done and to see the large-scale ecological restoration effort to return areas of lawn to more natural conditions, consider joining us for one of the following land stewardship workdays.
OCTOBER Land Stewardship Workdays
We are seeking volunteers interested in building and fostering healthy habitats and beautiful native gardens.
Wednesday, October 7 | 10:00 am -12:00 pm — Prairie
Cut back and remove invasive, nonnative Teasel seed. Then we will work in small groups to collect a variety of native wildflower seeds that we can process and “clean”, sitting at tables next to the prairie. Bring your favorite pruners. Park in the main lot, meet down at the prairie, or get a ride down in a golf cart.
Friday, October 23 | 10:00 am-12:00 pm — Around the Pond
Reduce the competitive edge of Canada Goldenrod through seedhead and rhizome (underground stem) removal. We will also spread equally assertive native grasses, Asters, and Ironweed seed. Bring your favorite shovel. Park in the main lot, meet at the pond to the west, or get a ride over in a golf cart from the parking lot.
Wednesday, October 28 | 5:30 pm – 7:00 pm — Tree Pruning Workday
Land stewardship service-learning opportunity with community partners, Friends of Grand Rapids-Parks. Learn proper tree trimming techniques from certified arborists and the team responsible for adding valuable tree cover throughout the City of Grand Rapids. Then practice your new skills on some of the young trees in need of structural pruning on the campus. No experience necessary; all tools and training provided.
Registration is required for this tree pruning instruction workday.
