A Catholic Priest and Sisters were sent to Chimbote Peru over fifty years ago to teach. Although they never stopped teaching, they saw Christ in the human suffering of mothers, dying babies, and the families around them; they have met the health needs of the poorest of the poor in Chimbote ever since. Father/Monsignor Jules Roos of the Diocese of Pittsburgh died here in Chimbote at age 82 in February 2013 after giving 50 years of service to the people he grew to love. Grand Rapids Dominican Sisters Margaret Mary Birchmeier and Sister Lillian Bockheim, both in their mid-seventies, also have served almost 50 years each. While still building, staffing, and operating this “oasis of love and hope,” they personally are always ministering to His flock.
