Dominican Sisters Grand Rapids Thanksgiving on Beaver Island 1940

A Thanksgiving to remember with Grand Rapids Dominican Sisters, from the 1940 Beaver Island annals, Archives of the Dominican Sisters~Grand Rapids.

In 1940, the parish of Holy Cross in the little town  of St. James, Beaver Island, in Northern Michigan was the setting for a small Thanksgiving Feast. Pictured from, left to right are Sisters Gilbert Popp, Agnes Dominic Roberge, and Leah Dorion, and a fourth Sister, missioned to teach at the Island’s only school. Winter’s imminent arrival would keep the Sisters Island-bound with their students and families — offering prayers of Thanksgiving for the spirit of community that would sustain them for the coming months.

Today, we express our gratitude for the presence of these Sisters–and for all the Sisters–who served in education throughout Michigan.
