“Be still and know I am God.” ~ Psalm 46:10
Praise and thanks to God for all the gifts, happiness, and blessings I have been given these past 75 years! I have been blessed with a Dominican vocation and living its charism in loving service to God’s people. God’s love is kind and generous.
My parents, Ludmilla and Wencel, welcomed twin girls on July 4, 1929. What a joy it was! We were baptized Mary and Theresa. Tiny at birth, no baby clothes would fit and we had shoeboxes for cradles.
Education began in a one-room schoolhouse. In time we went to public schools and in high school I attended St. Mary’s School in Lake Leelanau for my junior and senior years.
In 1947, God took our dear mother, leaving eleven children at home. After graduation I remained at home to take care of Pa and my siblings. I did everything: cooked meals, washed clothes, ironed, canned fruit, whatever needed to be done.
With the encouragement of my sister Helen, I began college studies at Aquinas. My vocation to Dominican life was simple. Sophomore year I visited Fr. Wilson in his office. He took me upstairs to the sewing room. Sr. Anthony Marie measured me for a Postulant dress. I tried it on. It was a perfect fit. No trunk filled with clothes, no extras – just pure desire. I was ready!
Study was of extreme importance, and I was blessed to receive a BA from Aquinas, a Theology Certificate from the Aquinas Theological Institute, and an MA from Michigan State University.
Through the years I have taught grades 3-7 and assumed fulltime principalship at St. Catherine in Ravenna, St. Adalbert in Grand Rapids, and St. Charles in Greenville.
I enjoy cooking, sewing, embroidery work, following Notre Dame football, and traveling. In retirement I reside at Aquinata Hall, spending time in prayer and volunteering my services.
Sister David Therese Korson hired me to be her Kindergarten teacher at St. Charles in Greenville! I drove 35 miles, one way, for 12 years, because I loved being a part of this beautiful ladies life! She was an amazing administrator, and taught me so much! I’m so blessed that God gave me this experience! ~ Ann Marie Smith
