This spring, the Dominican Center Spiritual Director community joined together to deepen their practices and support one another through learning, reflection and conversation on three evenings convened around how to deepen presence and awareness, how to listen to the person beneath labels or problems, and to discuss some of the ways to handle situations common to the profession.

Shared Learning

The Spiritual Director Development Series offered opportunities to engage important topics that emerge in the practice of spiritual direction. Participants reflected on personal growth and boundaries, ethical considerations, making referrals, receiving supervision, and the ever-present invitation to grow in awareness and discernment.

These sessions reminded us that spiritual direction is not a solitary endeavor. While directors accompany others in listening for God’s movement, they also benefit from spaces where they can continue learning, asking questions, and receiving the wisdom of the larger community.

Consultation Panelist Gathering

On June 4th our Consultation Gathering began with a shared meal, setting the tone for an evening of collegiality, hospitality, and meaningful conversation among active spiritual directors. Participants engaged in a rich conversation with the panelists and at their tables about the practice of spiritual direction and the importance of ongoing support in ministry .

Our five seasoned panelists shared insights from years of experience and offered guidance on distinguishing consultation from supervision, navigating challenging situations, and sustaining healthy practices. Participants were invited into conversations marked by openness, curiosity, and mutual respect. The evening embodied the Dominican tradition of seeking truth together and honoring the many gifts present within the community.

Continuing the Journey

One of the greatest gifts of these gatherings has been the strengthening of relationships among spiritual directors. Beyond acquiring knowledge, participants discovered anew the importance of belonging to a community of practice—a place where questions are welcomed, experiences are shared, and wisdom is cultivated collectively.

As the ministry of spiritual direction continues to evolve, ongoing formation and collegial support remain essential. The Dominican Center is committed to nurturing spaces where spiritual directors can continue to study, reflect, consult, and encourage one another in their sacred work.
