The move is underway for the Grand Rapids Dominican Sisters as they leave the historic motherhouse opened in 1922. The Sisters’ residences are moving across their front yard to the former Marywood Health Center property at 111 Lakeside Drive.
Under the glow of a full moon, on February 14 and 15, 44 Sisters completed the journey from Marywood to the new Marywood, establishing a new place of residence and a new place of mission for the Congregation.
In a collaborative effort led by Sr. Jarrett DeWyse and assisted by Sisters, staff, Associates, volunteers and the moving company, belongings were moved, beds were set up, rooms were arranged – and many prayers of thanksgiving were said.
Let’s be truthful: it really was more than a small step for all who made the journey many times over, and for all who helped. This is a big accomplishment, full of courage and care. We go in confidence, knowing we will lack for nothing, for God has given us the gift of preaching. Our deepest thanks for all who helped, and all who prayed.
The move from the Motherhouse has been phased. The last group of Sisters will move from the former Motherhouse at 2025 Fulton Street East to another location in early March.
