We serve as faithful witnesses on Earth, listening for God’s voice on our hearts about matters of the world.
Under gray skies and steady rain at Marywood Campus in Michigan, the Dominican Sisters & Associates of Grand Rapids joined Catholics across the United States in public witness for our immigrant sisters and brothers.
“Standing together in faith and solidarity, we proclaim that migrants are not strangers but neighbors and friends. All people are created in the image and likeness of God,” said witness Jessica Bowen.
“We advocate for just immigration policy and humane treatment of all people in Michigan, the United States, and around the world, recognizing the interconnectedness of our world,” said Bowen, Promoter of Justice for the Grand Rapids Congregation of Catholic sisters.
“What a blessing to see so many Sisters, Associates, and friends gathered to witness for the dignity of migrants! The umbrellas, thoughtful signs, prayers, and shared commitment spoke volumes. Our faith calls us to stand with courage and compassion, especially for dignity of our migrant sisters and brothers,” said Bowen, who is Promoter of Justice for the Grand Rapids Congregation of Catholic sisters.
Nationwide, Catholic organizations and religious orders participating include Jesuits East province, Jesuit Refugee Service USA, the Ignatian Solidarity Network, Maryknoll, Network Lobby for Catholic Social Justice, Pax Christi USA, and the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops’ Migration and Refugee Services.
As vowed women religious and as a Congregation, it is the Gospel and Catholic Social Teaching that call the Dominican Sisters ~ Grand Rapids to bear witness to the dignity of every human person.
We embrace our Dominican charism of Veritas (“Truth”) which compels us to search for and preach truth as it impacts the lives of people and planet—to be a voice that focuses attention on the cry of Earth and the cry of the poor.
Our position is supported by Catholic Social Teaching and our Congregation Direction Statement which reads, in part, “Our call is to welcome the stranger, to speak the truth of the roots of our own immigrant nation, and to advocate for just immigration policies and practices.
