Sister Barbara Hansen’s story is one of justice and service. It is also about appreciation for all who serve others with care and compassion. She spent 17 years raising awareness, through public television, about community organizations that serve the most vulnerable among us.

More recently Sister Barbara has been mobilizing Sisters, employees, and friends to gather in service to the community. For annual “Day of Service” events, she links volunteers with deserving organizations who serve vulnerable populations in Grand Rapids: children who are homeless or hungry, people who live in poverty, young mothers and new babies.

Dominican Sisters have been in Grand Rapids for 123 years, in Michigan for 140 years. Sister Barbara Hansen has been spreading hope through ministry for 60 years. As we conclude National Catholic Sisters Week, we give thanks to her and to all of our Dominican Sisters who have served throughout history.
