There’s something quietly powerful about gathering around a table—hands full of evergreen boughs, wire, ribbon, and the scent of pine—to craft an Advent wreath in community. At Plainsong Farm, some of Dominican Center staff shared in this Advent wreath–making Sunday practice that wove community, reflection, prayer and creation into a rich experience.
Participants trimmed branches, tucked sprigs of cedar and fir into place, and helped one another shape sturdy and beautiful circles while sipping cocoa. Friendships renewed, laughter shared, and the simple act of creating served as a reminder that preparation for Advent isn’t meant to be hurried or solitary. It’s meant to be communal, grounded, and hopeful.
The Advent wreath carries deep symbolism within the Christian tradition:
- The circular shape represents God’s unending love—no beginning, no end—and the promise of eternal life.
- Evergreens symbolize enduring hope, even in the darkest, coldest seasons.
- The four candles mark the four weeks of Advent and traditionally stand for hope, peace, joy, and love.
- Lighting a new candle each week mirrors the arrival of increasing light as Christmas approaches, a reminder that even a small flame can push back darkness.
At Plainsong Farm the wreath is made from the land’s own gifts. Each stem and branch is a reminder of creation’s role in the story of redemption and the partnership between people, land, and God.
The wreath we made for the Dominican Center is more than decoration. It is a circle of gathered greenery and a reminder of sacred community. An invitation to slow down, pay attention and welcome the hope that lights our season. Please join us this Advent season in one or more of our many offerings–we will keep the light on for you!
