News release: The Archbishop of Santa Fe New Mexico believes the Archdiocese of Santa Fe has a special role to play in facilitating an urgent dialogue about nuclear disarmament as a critical step toward world peace.

Archbishop John C. Wester will unveil and offer a blessing of a sign of peace at Shrine of Our Lady of Guadalupe in Santa Fe, New Mexico on Sunday, December 19 at 1:00pm to initiate this conversation.

The Dominican Sisters ~ Grand Rapids have been blessed by a long, rich relationship with the people of New Mexico, including the Archdiocese of Santa Fe. We are thrilled to share the prophetic word the Archdiocese is speaking about nuclear disarmament. As a Congregation we have taken public positions against nuclear weapons and several of our Sisters have undertaken profound public witness against these violent and inhumane weapons. Their use causes the annihilation of humanity and Earth; the vast resources wasted on their production steals from people who are poor.

We celebrate this wonderful, prophetic moment in the Archdiocese of Santa Fe — a wonderful moment and a wonderful witness!! All who are able to join in the gathering in Santa Fe on December 19 are encouraged to do so. Sisters, Associates and friends of the Congregation who are at a distance are invited to observe a moment of prayer on December 19 at 1 pm (Mountain time)/ 3 pm (Eastern time). This will be livestreamed Sunday, December 19 at 1:00pm in New Mexico / 3:00pm Eastern time.

If you are unable to access the livestream, perhaps you will take a few moments in a silent prayer of solidarity in the work for a non-nuclear world.

The unveiling and blessing will take place outside, so please dress appropriately for Santa Fe winter weather and observe COVID-19 protocols of masking and social distancing.

In honor of Our Lady of Guadalupe, attendees are encouraged to bring a rose, their hopes, prayers, and aspirations for a peaceful world. All are welcome.
