Is “Foundations II: Wisdom from the Margins” a fit for me?

by facilitator Kimberley Mulder

In my discussions over the last few years, I’ve answered this question a few different ways.

As we endeavor to follow God faithfully, we need voices from outside our “norm” to speak words of wisdom that can be surprisingly comforting, challenging, welcoming, or revelatory. Since this course has been crafted within the majority world of white ecumenical Christianity, we’ve selected people to listen to who aren’t from this majority worldview or disidentified with it. And so, my first answer to the leading question is:

Foundations II is for the white Christian who is starting to notice or wanting to deepen their awareness of Christian leaders and mystics who aren’t white majority or found their way to the sides of those who aren’t.

Along the way, we’ve discovered that this class is a petri dish for the deep personal work for many who are discovering that they’ve been doing, doing, doing (or feel they should be!) yet God is inviting them into the wisdom of having margin and resting in the source of all life.

Throughout the course, we work intimately with the push and pull of this tension between action in the world and contemplation

The course is for you also if you desire to practice listening deeply to God’s action in lives different than your own, learning how to do this in study and or in conversation with others.

A core element of the course is the contemplative small group each month in which we practice holy listening to each other. This is where a lot of transformation occurs and people have been encouraged, inspired, and changed. And, practically speaking, this course is for you if you can’t come physically to Dominican Center for programs as we offer it only online via Zoom!

So, if you are curious about people like Desmund Tutu, Barbara Holmes, Oscar Romero and the Grimke Sisters; if you’re seeking a community to delve into the tension of doing and being; if you’re wanting to learn and practice the transformational way of listening deeply to others; and you’re open to learning online – join us for Foundations II: Wisdom from the Margins!

We meet twice a month, once for presentations in class and once in small groups. Learn more and sign up here!
