SisterSylvia Wozniak

Jubilee! For me it marks fifty years of faithful, faith-filled living vowed Dominican life. I thank God for sustaining grace and countless gifts – talents, persons and circumstances which foster life, love and ministry. I pray for wisdom to continue discerning and answering God’s call as my journey unfolds.

Barbara Mary Wozniak was born on January 21, 1941 in Alpena, Michigan to Phillip and Helen Wozniak. She has three sisters, a half-brother (deceased) and a half-sister. She attended St. Anne Parish School and graduated from Alpena Catholic Central High School.

In September of 1959 Barbara joined the Grand Rapids Dominicans, receiving the name Sister Mary Sylvia of Our Lady of Czestochowa at Reception. She taught for fifteen years as an elementary teacher in Saginaw, Traverse City, West Branch, Hannah, Grand Rapids and in Santa Cruz, New Mexico.

After Sister Sylvia was mentored by Sr. Thomas More in Weare and Pentwater in Michigan, she accepted positions in Religious Education in Howell, Caseville, Pinnebog, and Merrill.

Sister Sylvia served as pastoral minister at Bay City’s St. Stanislaus Parish. Currently, she serves as volunteer in Saginaw at Community Prescription Support Program, The Children’s Christmas Store, and her local parish.
