Since opening its doors in 2013, nearly 300 people have sought out the holistic rehabilitation therapy offered at Marywood Health Center, a health care ministry of the Dominican Sisters~Grand Rapids in partnership with Porter Hills.

Marywood Health Center, located on the Marywood Campus at 111 Lakeside Drive NE, in Grand Rapids, combines skilled nursing, rehabilitation therapy, and spiritual companionship in a facility that features private patient rooms, bathrooms and showers.

“That’s an unusual combination in this region making this a fairly attractive alternative for men and women recovering from illness or injury,” says Lisa McMichael, executive director, Marywood Health Center.

Spectrum Health Continuing Care has made a big difference in the center’s ability to respond to a growing number of referrals and patients electing to heal at Marywood through the donation of 17 licensed beds. The number of licensed beds made available within a specific geographical area is regulated by the State. The Dominican Sisters were thrilled upon learning that Spectrum Health would transfer 17 licensed beds from their own rehabilitation facility to the Marywood Health Center.

“It was a needed gift,” said Sister Maureen Geary, prioress of Dominican Sisters~Grand Rapids. “It allowed us to meet our goal of operating a 49-bed center. The Marywood Health Center mission is patient-focused: heal holistically, restore quality of life and return patients home. The ministry extends our legacy of sharing resources in service to others.”

“Our mission is to improve the health of the communities we serve,” said Karen Pakkala, vice president of operations for Spectrum Health Continuing Care. “We work to recognize the needs of the broader community, particularly in Grand Rapids. When we heard of the Dominican Sisters’ desire to grow and serve more patients, it made sense for us to step in and help in this way. They have a very unique mission and we are pleased to be able to support them serve patients in this way.”
