Cook (Full-Time) $18.71/hour

The Dominican Sisters~Grand Rapids are seeking a full-time Cook. The position is primarily responsible for preparing meals on the Marywood campus for Sisters, following ServSafe principles and the state food code, safely operating and maintaining institutional kitchen equipment, and requires the ability to work independently as well as with the team to achieve daily responsibilities.

40 hours/week, every other weekend off, includes rotating holidays. Schedule consists of a mix of morning and day shifts, nothing later than 7:00pm ….no late nights.

Responsibilities:

  • Prepares meals for Sisters in various locations on the Marywood Campus using standardized recipes, following ServSafe principles.
  • Responsible for meals being ready by the set service times.
  • Responsible for maintaining established food quality standards.
  • Uses basic math skills when calculating recipe production in comparison to how many portions have been ordered.
  • Prepares modified meals for Sisters in compliance with the international dysphagia diet standards.
  • Assists other staff members with meal preparation, events, and clean up.
  • Maintains safe workstation. All areas must be kept sanitary and free from clutter.
  • Cleans and maintains daily dishes and kitchen equipment.
  • Manages safety precautions as described in the HACCP principles, the local health code, and the GRD Standard Operating Procedures Manual.
  • Maintains uniform to the standard described in the Marywood Food Service dress code. Hairnets are required in food preparation areas to ensure food safety.
  • Assists in maintaining a hospitable, all-inclusive environment for guests, Sisters, and fellow staff members.
  • Participates in the Care-of-the-Earth vision by using less material resources through various methods and by recycling.
  • Functions independently as well as with a team.
  • Must be able to identify problems and provide solutions when working alone or collaborating with Supervisor.
  • Facilitates teamwork through the acceptance and expression of constructive comments.
  • Demonstrates initiative, independence, and good judgment in carrying out recurring assignments.
  • Demonstrates the ability to be understood and to understand a wide range of internal and external contacts including, but not limited to, Sister residents, co-workers, and guests.
  • Shows care in working with equipment and supplies.
  • Regular, predictable attendance is required.
  • May transport food and/or supplies between buildings.
  • Hours include every other weekend and some holidays.

Qualifications:

  • High School degree or general education equivalent preferred.
  • Valid driver’s license with acceptable driving record.
  • Formal culinary training preferred.
  • Considerable training and experience including three to five years’ experience. Knowledge of institutional cooking procedures and operations.
  • Requires the ability to read, write and use basic math skills.

Physical Requirements:

  • Long periods of standing.
  • Frequent bending, twisting, pushing/pulling and lifting up to 50 lbs.
  • Standing and walking for extended periods of time and distances, sometimes while carrying or pushing heavy items.
  • Must be able to tolerate extreme heat and cold.
  • Moderate risks or discomforts which require special safety precautions such as personal protective equipment.
  • Works in humid environment and must be able to tolerate working with cleaning chemicals.

Job Hazards

  • Potential for burns, cuts, and falls.
  • Operates basic kitchen equipment and tools such as, but not limited to, knives, microwave oven, range, mixer, buffalo chopper, ovens, and toaster.
  • Uses a variety of cleaning chemicals.
  • May be exposed to the elements when transporting food between locations.
