Mission and Direction
Our Mission
The life mission of St. Dominic, our founder, in 1206 was:
t TO PRAISE
t TO BLESS
t TO PREACH
Our life mission remains the same today.
The mission of Dominican Sisters ~ Grand Rapids, in both our personal and professional ministries, is to live the Gospel. This includes empowering people spiritually, intellectually, socially, materially, and by promoting justice through prayer, study and service.
Dominican Life and Vision
Rooted in the Dominican tradition of apostolic living, we adopted the following direction statements to guide our daily choices:
- We commit ourselves to foster the contemplative stance that all the earth is sacred and interconnected; respect and accountability for the earth are necessary to the survival of life. We affirm the actions which impact the environment will be preceded by the question: Is this action which I (we) are performing supportive of the environment?
- We commit as women to stand with other women of our world as we experience oppression, poverty and violence.
- Given our educational and social service history with children, we commit ourselves to act as their advocates in local, national and international communities.
- Poverty is a social sin. We commit ourselves to stand in solidarity with people who are materially poor and to engage in their struggle by: walking together; allowing ourselves to be changed; mutually serving; effecting systemic change; and being a bridge between rich and poor.
- We commit ourselves to be open to encountering the Holy in ourselves, in each other, and in people of all cultures and lifestyles.
- In a world crying for a sense of community and in response to our growing hunger for a deeper and broader understanding/experience of Dominican Common Life, we affirm our union and communion with each other. Rooted in the Dominican tradition of apostolic living founded on the vows, we commit ourselves with renewed energy and passion to living common life and developing structures to support it.
- We commit ourselves to the prophetic call of our direction statements to initiate and sustain collaborative ministries that effect systemic change.
