Writing Opportunities Reading Discoveries Project

Mission
The WORD Project seeks to provide an intergenerational literacy program of services to enable individuals to improve the quality of their lives and their community.

Vision
By providing programs that meet the needs of literacy, the WORD Project hopes to empower individuals to help alleviate their poverty, enrich the quality of their lives and become involved in community action toward a reconstructed, improved and viable neighborhood environment and beyond.

History
The Writing Opportunities Reading Discoveries (WORD) Project began in September of 1998 through the support of the Dominican Sisters ~ Grand Rapids. The WORD Project staff and volunteers continue to develop an environment that is inclusive, ecumenical and collaborative. The increasing number of volunteers has made it possible to expand services to meet the literacy needs of persons of all ages in a low income and increasingly Spanish speaking area commonly known as the Northwest Neighborhood in Grand Rapids. Presently, WORD consists of two different programs: Homework Assistancce and Skill Development (HASD) for school age children, and English as a Second Language (ESL) for adults.

Adult English as a Second Language

 The Adult ESL program enables adults who do not speak fluent English to function fully in our society.  By determining the hopes and dreams of a student, we are able to develop a one-on-one learning plan, computer-based programs, as well as group work.

Volunteers
We have had hundreds of tutors (Sisters, Associates and lay volunteers) who give of their time and talents to assist our learners since 1998. Helping someone at the WORD Project’s ESL is a viable method of giving back to the community. The ability to read, write and speak English in the United States is critical to

cultural and financial viability in
work and in society.

We welcome volunteers who:
  • Can commit to a semester (18 weeks) of tutoring;
  • Are flexible, responsible and generous;
  • Enjoy working with people and respect other cultures;
  • Wish to join us in changing the systems that hold people.
