Marywood Alumnae Homecoming 2012

The Marywood Alumnae Homecoming will take place on May 18 & 19, 2012. The reception will take place at 5:00 pm on Friday, May 18 at the Dominican Center at Marywood, and will include reminiscing, sharing memorabilia, great food and great fun. Saturday, May 19 will be a day of enrichment, and will include speakers Judge Sara Smolensik and Sister Nathalie Meyer.

Sisters Artwork Displayed at First United Methodist Church

Three of our sister artists have had items chosen for the exhibit at First United Methodist Church.  This juried Celebration of the Arts runs from February 11 – 22, 2012.  Art exhibit hours are daily from 10:00 am to 6:00 pm. The church is located 227 Fulton between Barclay and Lafayette.

Sisters Raising Awareness of Human Trafficking in Advance of Super Bowl

Eleven orders of Catholic women religious, including the Dominican Sisters ~ Grand Rapids, are raising awareness of human trafficking (modern-day slavery) in conjunction with the February 5th Super Bowl in Indianapolis.

Partners in Parenting Receives more than $9,000 in Grants

The Partners in Parenting ministry, under the direction of Sisters Marguerite Cool and Jean Kramer, has recently received grants from two major national organizations. The Conrad N. Hilton Fund for Sisters awarded the ministry $6,900 and the Ronald McDonald House Charities of Outstate Michigan has provided $1,250, along with a matching $1,250 grant from the national Ronald McDonald Charities.

The grants will go toward programming initiatives for Partners in Parenting and the motor home upkeep. Their 35-foot motor home travels throught the region's urban and rural communities.

Sister Aquinas Weber Receives Papal Honor

Sister Aquinas Weber has received a Pro Ecclesia et Pontifice Cross from Pope Benedict XVI for her service to the Catholic Church. She was nominated by Bishop Walter A. Hurley, who will present the award to Sister Aquinas during a December 5, 2011 ceremony beginning at 7:30 pm at the Cathedral of Saint Andrew.

Sister Robert Ann Erno Receives Lifetime Achievement Award

Sister Robert Ann Erno received a Lifetime Achievement Award from Catholic Central High School during the school's Evening of Excellence Awards Dinner in October. The school also created the Education Excellence Fund, an endowed fund for program development and student scholarships, to salute Sister Robert Ann.

Dominican Center at Marywood Gets High Ranking in Business Journal

In case you missed it, the Dominican Center was rated as the eighth busiest conference center in the greater Grand Rapids area, based on its 2010 business volume. The survey, conducted by the

Grand Rapids Business Journal, ranked 40 area conference centers according to the number of annual events and guests. DCM weighed in with 828 events and 35,328 attendees, topping other notable centers such as Calvin College’s Prince Conference Center (9th), Grand Valley State University’s Eberhard Center (12th) and Celebration! Banquets and Catering (14th).

Heritage Room Highlighting Sisters' History Coming to DCM

A newly renovated space at DCM will showcase the history of the Dominican Sisters ~ Grand Rapids, past and present. Called the Heritage Room, it will be located to the right of Dominican Chapel Marywood for people exiting the chapel.

The room is designed to attract visitors ranging from Sisters and visitors to DCM and Marywood to the general public, historians and archivists. Renovation is expected to be completed in the summer of 2012.

Sister Ann Catherine Receives Hall of Fame Honor

The late Sister Ann Catherine Harrand, OP is among five individuals to be inducted into the Grand Traverse Area Catholic Schools Hall of Fame on Oct. 8. Sister Ann Catherine taught first grade at St. Francis in Traverse City for 25 years. "I loved teaching and in later years I could really see the beauty of soul in each child," she said.

Nominations for the award are based on criteria that includes outstanding contributions to the schools and/or society, exceptional success and integrity and excellence and longevity in the field. The Hall of Fame event, to be held at St. Francis High School, will include an awards luncheon and recognition of the honorees during the school’s homecoming football game.

Sister Rena Exhibits Art

Sister Rena Ruddy exhibited acrylic paintings and several flower arrangements this summer at Schoenherr Towers, her mission home in Sterling Heights, Michigan. "Numerous residents flowed into our beautiful community for three hours to see my displays," she said. "It was a happy, delightful, memorable experience for me."

Sister Bertran Receives Aquinas College Hall of Fame Honor

The late Dominican Sister Bertrand LaLonde is a 2011 inductee into the Aquinas College Hall of Fame, which recognizes outstanding contributions and lifelong achievements by alumni and friends. Sister Bertrand taught at the college for 30 years, initially as Director of Studies and a French teacher. She also chaired the division of language and literature and later chaired the French and Spanish department.

Nature/Sculpture Garden

Instruments of Hope (IOH), a non-profit organization, will be developing and installing a nature/sculpture garden on the Marywood property. There will be several sculptures of Saint Francis of Assisi placed at intervals along the paved walking path, along with benches for resting. The garden will be accessible to all. Imagine Peace Video Series

Our Preaching Through Media Committee has been working on creating short DVDs entitled "Imagine Peace" which can be used in various youth or adult times for reflection and faith sharing. Visit the Preaching Through Media Committee page and there you will see four links to videos which are housed at www.archives.org. They are short, meditative pieces produced through a collaborative effort by all members of this committee.
